Old Animation

[Quicktime Plug-in required]

These are simple animated sequences I created in 1991 when I was ending my tenure as a troubled teenager (was anyone not somehow troubled as a teenager?). These were mostly centered around one of my ongoing themes involving primitive geometric stick figures that were metaphors for human traits. These pre-date my refinement of the Trait concept so they don't include the very different looking dominant and recessive traits.

The animation is primitive and it's supposed to be. I cranked most of these out in one day spending an hour or more on each. These were all drawn and animated completely in an old scriptable database called HyperCard (with some extra art in the late great Superpaint). These clips below were converted into Quicktime movies but pretty much maintain the quality of the originals (or lack of). Considering what can be done these days with Flash or other animation software, I'm sure not everyone will realize how much of a hack these were. Animating in Hypercard involved either some advanced scripting or a simple flipbook approach where all the "pages" were shown as fast as the computer could go. These were basically the flipbook method. Ironically Hypercard was the original development platform for Cyan - now known for the Myst series of interactive puzzle games.
